Healthy Food and Lifestyle Habits
(01:48)
Aileen introduces this topic with a POEM by Portia Nelson … it’s a poem we often share with clients when they are approaching making healthy food and lifestyle changes. The title of the poem is “There’s a hole in my sidewalk but we call it “Sometimes it takes a while to GET IT”. Then we talk about how long it typically takes to develop a good habit.

Our suggested action after this episode.
A POEM by Portia Nelson … it’s a poem we often share with clients when they are approaching making healthy food and lifestyle changes. She calls it “There’s a hole in my sidewalk but we call it “Sometimes it takes a while to GET IT” so here we go ….
“I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
I walk down another street.”
We suggest ONE KEY ACTION after todays episode:
You may have been thinking of some habits that you KNOW would be supportive to you for a while. So take 60 seconds NOW to choose a very simple healthy habit that you can start changing tomorrow.
By simple we suggest examples such as AN EXTRA GLASS OF WATER per day OR scheduling what time your meals will be so that you eat regularly OR Choosing which days will be alcohol free OR going to bed 15 minutes earlier OR doing your stretches post runs.
CHOOSE something that is FREE i.e. no cost and simple to do – not too many steps or too much organisation. START and PRACTICE and REPEAT … please let us know how you get on.
